The Mercedes-Benz Biome concept looks like it came out of the movie, “Tron: Legacy” (2010). The vehicle was envisioned by Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center California.
Notes about the Mercedes-Benz Biome (from Autoblog):
Each year the LA Auto Show plays host to the Los Angeles Design Challenge, where aspiring designers partner with automakers to envision the future of mobility. This year’s theme was to create the 1,000-pound car, and Mercedes-Benz’ three designs – one from the U.S., another from Germany and yet another from Japan – are predictably out there.
The entrant from Mercedes’ U.S. design arm in Carlsbad, CA was not only rendered but built into a full-scale model. The basis for the Biome Concept is a vehicle that “grows in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery.” Not only that, but it’s powered by a combination of the sun and a chemical bond from an imaginary liquid dubbed BioNectar4534. It’s all natural, all organic and all science fiction. Size-wise, the Biome comes in at a theoretical 875 pounds, but it’s massively wide, slightly shorter than a CL and about as tall as a Vector.
Eminent biologist Professor Frank Fenner, who helped to eradicate smallpox, recently made the dire prediction that humans will probably be extinct within the next 100 years due to overpopulation, environmental destruction and climate change.
Fenner, who is emeritus professor of microbiology at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra, said homo sapiens will not be able to survive the population explosion and “unbridled consumption,” and will become extinct, perhaps within a century, along with many other species. United Nations official figures from last year estimate the human population is 6.8 billion, and is predicted to pass seven billion next year.
Fenner told The Australian he tries not to express his pessimism because people are trying to do something, but keep putting it off. He said he believes the situation is irreversible, and it is too late because the effects we have had on Earth since industrialization (a period now known to scientists unofficially as the Anthropocene) rivals any effects of ice ages or comet impacts.

Fenner said that climate change is only at its beginning, but is likely to be the cause of our extinction. “We’ll undergo the same fate as the people on Easter Island,” he said. More people means fewer resources, and Fenner predicts “there will be a lot more wars over food.”
Easter Island is famous for its massive stone statues. Polynesian people settled there, in what was then a pristine tropical island, around the middle of the first millennium AD. The population grew slowly at first and then exploded. As the population grew the forests were wiped out and all the tree animals became extinct, both with devastating consequences. After about 1600 the civilization began to collapse, and had virtually disappeared by the mid-19th century. Evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond said the parallels between what happened on Easter Island and what is occurring today on the planet as a whole are “chillingly obvious.”
While many scientists are also pessimistic, others are more optimistic. Among the latter is a colleague of Professor Fenner, retired professor Stephen Boyden, who said he still hopes awareness of the problems will rise and the required revolutionary changes will be made to achieve ecological sustainability. “While there’s a glimmer of hope, it’s worth working to solve the problem. We have the scientific knowledge to do it but we don’t have the political will,” Boyden said.
Fenner, 95, is the author or co-author of 22 books and 290 scientific papers and book chapters. His announcement in 1980 to the World Health Assembly that smallpox had been eradicated is still seen as one of the World Health Organisation’s greatest achievements. He has also been heavily involved in controlling Australia’s feral rabbit population with the myxomatosis virus.
Professor Fenner has had a lifetime interest in the environment, and from 1973 to 1979 was Director of the Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies at ANU. He is currently a visiting fellow at the John Curtin School of Medical Research at the university, and is a patron of Sustainable Population Australia. He has won numerous awards including the ANZAC Peace Prize, the WHO Medal, and the Albert Einstein World Award of Science. He was awarded an MBE for his work on control of malaria in New Guinea during the Second World War, in which Fenner served in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the revamp of Facebook’s messaging system. And Google better watch out.
Although there were rumors that Facebook would create an email service to wipe out other services, including Google’s Gmail, Zuckerberg announced that email is just one part of the plan, saying, “This is not an e-mail killer. It is a messaging system that includes e-mail as part of it.”
Zuckerberg called a special event in San Francisco to reveal his plans on Monday, a day before he’s set to speak at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco.
Zuckerberg said the revamp would bring together four messaging types: SMS, Instant Messaging, e-mail and Facebook chat. Facebook users will also be able to get a facebook.com addresses with their accounts.
Zuckerberg predicts that email is past its prime and isn’t going to be a modern messaging system in the future.
“If we do a good job, some people will say this is the way that the future will work,” Zuckerberg declared.
But Zuckerberg refuted rumors that Facebook was trying to create a “Gmail killer” as the press has titled the revamp. He did, however, explain that people are favoring instant messaging and chats over email because it’s simpler, “more fun” and more efficient to use.
He gracefully added that Gmail is a “great product” and “email is still important to a lot of people.”
Facebook’s director of engineering, Andrew “Boz” Bosworth, admitted just how enormous this revamp was, saying that 15 Facebook engineers worked on the project for 15 months.
Facebook engineer Joel Seligstein wrote a blog that revealed Facebook’s revamped messaging service will prioritize relationships.
“It seems wrong that an email message from your best friend gets sandwiched between a bill and a bank statement. It’s not that those other messages aren’t important, but one of them is more meaningful,” Seligstein wrote.
Seligstein added that the messaging platform is simplified, “There are no subject lines, no cc:, no bcc:, and you can send a message by hitting the Enter key. We modelled it more closely to chat and reduced the number of things you need to do to send a message. We wanted to make this more like a conversation.”
Too bad the new Facebook messaging will not be available to Canadian users right away!
Their Dream Jobs Are ‘Crazy Awesome’
By Dr. Tom Snyder, Editor
Working on one’s dream job can be “crazy awesome.”
Just ask Zachary Levi, star of the hit spy series on NBC-TV, CHUCK, and the voice behind the lead male character in Disney’s new animated fairy tale, TANGLED, loosely based on the story of Rapunzel, the gal with the long, flowing golden hair.
Zachary, actress Mandy Moore, who plays Rapunzel, and the movie’s two directors appeared at Disneyland recently to talk about TANGLED.
“This is the first voiceover job I’ve had, even though I’ve dreamt about doing it my whole life,” said Zachary, a confessed “Dis-Nerd.” “I’m such a cartoon kid. I was raised on them.”
Zachary says working on a Disney animated movie is “crazy awesome.” For an example of what he means, he cited the title character in Disney/Pixar’s WALL-E.
“You feel for him more than you feel for real actors doing other movies,” he said. “That’s how good those guys are. So, when I found out John Lasseter [who’s in charge of Disney/Pixar’s animated movies] and that collective genius were going to be overseeing all of this, I’m like, I’m in great hands!”
What was he most surprised about when he finally saw the final 2D version of TANGLED?
“What really grabs you is how beautiful it looks,” he said. “Other than that, what surprised me is just how well all those scenes and characters interact seamlessly. It’s really cool how it all comes together.”
Zach thinks the entertainment business is all about the audience.
“I’m very blessed to do what I do,” he said. “It should never be about us; it should always be about what do they [the audience] want. What’s fun for them? They’re the only reason I get to keep a job.”
Although TANGLED proves Zach has a wonderful singing voice, don’t expect a musical episode for his hit spy series on NBC-TV, CHUCK.
“I don’t know that is such a great idea,” he said. “That would be like, Here’s the shark, and this is us jumping it.”
Mandy Moore is the voice of Rapunzel, not only in the dialogue but also in the musical numbers.
One of the things that attracted her to the movie was Rapunzel’s heroic qualities, but that wasn’t the only thing.
“I loved the idea that, in her entire life, Rapunzel was told that her 70 feet of long, magical hair was what made her special, that set her apart from everyone else. That ended up not being the case. It ended up the special magical qualities were within her the entire time. And, I loved that Flynn loved her even more when he cut her hair off, when she was just herself. ”

"Do me a favor, explain how to open an Amazon banner in a new window. Thanks."
The question would be as the same as asking how to make an iFrame open in new window because Amazon uses iFrame for its banner.
Let's take the Amazon gift card banner below. Do click on it and confirm for yourself that it opens in new window and hopefully purchase a nice gift card for your love ones (Important note especially if you are an AdSense publisher. Never encourage readers to click because it can get you kicked out from the AdSense program and you will have a very very very hard time to get it back (see how to restore banned AdSense account if that had happened to you. AdSense is CPC (Cost per Click) so doing that is considered click fraud. However, Amazon is CPA (cost per action) and the Amazon Affiliate gets nothing from people clicking their banner, only when that action resulted in a purchase that the affiliate gets a small commission, so for Amazon ads they don't have a policy banning you from encouraging readers to click their ads).
Anyway, here is the Amazon gift card banner which opens in new window:
Now to show how to do it. Here is the original Amazon iFrame code with the source (src) highlighted in red:
<iframe src="
http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=applesorangespears-20&o=1&p=12&l=ur1&category=gift_certificates&banner=127JF9E4530CSFRCY4R2&f=ifr" width="300" height="250" scrolling="no" border="0" marginwidth="0" style="border:none;" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Now all you need to do is to add <1=_new to the source URL with the above iFrame code thus modified to
<iframe src="
http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=bloggerfordum-20&o=1&p=12&l=ur1&category=gift_certificates&banner=127JF9E4530CSFRCY4R2&f=ifr<1=_new" width="300" height="250" scrolling="no" border="0" marginwidth="0" style="border:none;" frameborder="0"></iframe>
Now if you want the above banner centered like this instead of aligned left:
all you need to do is to surround the above code with <div style="text-align:center;"> and </div> with the above becoming
<div style="text-align:center;"><iframe src="
http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=bloggerfordum-20&o=1&p=12&l=ur1&category=gift_certificates&banner=127JF9E4530CSFRCY4R2&f=ifr<1=_new" width="300" height="250" scrolling="no" border="0" marginwidth="0" style="border:none;" frameborder="0"></iframe><div>
Pretty simple right. Now for more Amazon banners, all opening in new windows:
